Join a team of UCT MSCers on their expedition to the Indian Himalaya this July! The primary aim of this expedition is the completion of an advanced mountaineering course to learn ice-climbing and mountaineering skills. Following the course the team will attempt an ascent of Chandra-Bagah 13, a peak standing over 6000m high.
Trip Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive In Manali
Day 2 : Pre-trip preparations in Manali
Day 3: Manali to Batal by Jeep
Day 4: Batal to Suthadi Nulla camp
Day 5: Suthadi Nulla camp to Base camp
Day 6 - Day 12: Training days
Day 13 - Day 18: Summit attempt of CB13
Day 19 & 20: Retreat days from the mountain and return to Manali.
Day 21: Depart from Manali.
Over the past four years the team members have gathered a lot of climbing and hiking skills individually in South African climatic conditions. The training days have been tailored specifically to take this into account and cover those aspects of mountaineering which are difficult to learn in the relatively low mountain ranges of Southern Africa.
* snow craft, ascending and descending snow slopes
* self-arrest techniques
* types and use of snow anchors, ice anchors and protection
* roped climbing, belay systems and fixed rope routines
* introduction to crampons, French cramponing and ice climbing
* glacier travel, crevasse rescue and evacuation
* establishing high camps and ‘leave no traces’ practices
